There's a place in Maryville, heading south towards McClellanville, that's been serving good Southern homestyle cooking for lunch for many years. Locals know it by the smell of freshly cooked food in the area. Others point to the white sign with bold letters on the back side of the building facing U.S. Highway 17. All will agree, however, the food is fulfilling and satisfying. That place is Deborah's Kitchen, located at 1926 South Island Road.
Owner Deborah Scott and her staff have consistently been preparing great food to offer customers on her buffet. There's nothing like dining in a place where you feel like family as soon as you walk in. Deborah makes sure of that. Why, you ask?
Family is close to heart for her. In the past couple of years, she's lost her mother and husband. It's the folks coming in and enjoying her food that keep her spirits alive and well.
And that smile she presents when you first walk in... priceless.
My late grandfather Walter Mercer loved coming here after attending church at Wayne Methodist. Even when talking about that, she lights up like Christmas.
Her lunch buffet is August's Simply Amazing Dish of the Month. And she deserves it.
The menu changes daily, however, nothing beats that glorious fried chicken. The amazing and fluffy mashed potatoes are a must - and you have to top it with that creamy gravy.
Favorites include spaghetti, meatloaf, pork chops and chicken pilau. You also get salad and soups on the buffet. We love the vegetable soup.
And the desserts are divine. Our go-to is the red velvet cake and chocolate delight.
Deborah serves breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday, closed Saturday and a lunch on Sunday.
If you have been fortunate enough to eat here, make it a point to grab a friend who's never been and introduce them to true Southern cooking with amazing hospitality.
Congratulations, Deborah's Kitchen. Keep up the great work and keep being a great part of the culinary adventure of Georgetown County.
