The parking lot of Uncle Tito's in Murrells Inlet was packed with people who came for one thing... Chicken bog. And there were 24 chefs (and their teammates) who graciously provided the superb dish. What could bring these fine folks together on such a marvelous Sunday? The Surf Dreams Foundation, of course. Phil Jackson, founder of the non profit, provides local children with surf gear and skills to become something most kids living on the ocean dream of - a surfer. This is the fourth chicken bog challenge for the Surf Dreams Foundation. This year, however, saw quite a few first-timers. R'way Pizza and Family Tavern and Southern Comforts, Southern Dining & Seafood Shack were among them. About 1,600 people came out to support the non profit and help provide funds to keep Jackson's dream of giving kids a chance a reality. They also enjoyed quite a few variations of chicken bog. But, they also enjoyed a heart-felt rendition of the national anthem, sang by J-Mike's Flavor Station owner Jaesen Moore, that brought tears to the eyes of many there. It also sank in more knowing that one of the chef's competing has a son deploying to the Middle East. For a person who used to skate and surf, seeing what Jackson and the Surf Dreams Foundation has been able to accomplish is a blessing (and puts a smile on my face). For kids out there in the scene to know such an organization exists is huge, especially if they think cost is a barrier. For that, I thank Surf Dreams Foundation for doing what they do. More, I thank all the chefs and restaurants who participated today and have participated annually. Take a look at the gallery below for more from this great event. |
